Livni blasts UN's Ban Ki-Moon

Instead of issuing statements of "concern" for Gaza's Arabs and pressing Israel to alleviate their "plight," United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon should see to it that the UN's members condemn the Gazans' shelling of Israeli civilians.

Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni reportedly delivered this unusually blunt message in a "strident" telephone conversation with the UN chief Thursday.

According to Ynetnews, Ban had called Livni to express his displeasure with the latest Israeli decision to close the goods crossings with the Strip – a decision made by Defense Minister Ehud Barak following continued rocket fire on the western Negev.

"Anyone who thinks things can just go about as normal when we are under fire is wrong. They keep firing at us and violating Israeli sovereignty. There is no way we will let anyone fire on Israel and not respond," Livni declared heatedly.

Gaza was far from a humanitarian crisis, and the blame for whatever situation the residents were experiencing lay solely at the door of Hamas, which controls the Strip.

Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza in the summer of 2005, ripping 9000 Jews out of their homes and giving the Palestinian Arabs the opportunity to establish self-rule in the area.

Instead the Arabs destroyed the industry left by the Jews, smuggled thousands of tons of explosives and weapons into Gaza and turned it into a Mecca for terrorism.
