Envoy Blair arrives in Jerusalem

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair arrived in Jerusalem Monday to start fulfilling his mandate, which is to help establish the institutions on which a State of Palestine can be erected on Israel's ancient lands.
Blair serves at the pleasure of the so-called Quartet as the international community's new envoy to the Middle East.
For the Arab side, he looks set to step off on a promising foot.
Reports in Israel Monday said the Briton was interested in talking, not only to the Israelis and the Palestinian Authority, but also to the Hamas Islamist terrorist group that now controls the Gaza Strip.
Israeli officials have called on Blair not to meet with Hamas officials, stating that there should be no compromise with that group.
But Hamas leaders appear to have successfully baited Blair by announcing at the weekend that he would have no credibility unless he spoke with them too.
It is anticipated that Blair will set up his new offices in the so-called Government House, a building that once housed the treacherous British Mandate authorities, and which is already used by the reflexively anti-Israel United Nations' special Middle East envoy and its so called Truce-Supervisory Committee.
